Gravel

Gravel racing is Justin’s current main focus, and with high caliber events emerging and flourishing worldwide, there are countless opportunities to bring an athlete with diabetes (himself) to the front and center. Justin wants to be at the most competitive events that have the greatest reach as far as spectators and participants, and this relatively new discipline of cycling has proven to be the perfect avenue to achieve these goals.

He has been able to net more than a handful of personal results while racing primarily as a leadout and support rider for his teammates. Justin is most proud of his race days spent in the breakaway, most notably at the UCI one-day and stage races, as he was the only rider with diabetes in these moves and was able to show everyone that diabetes was not slowing him down!

Diabetes

Justin was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he was just 2 years old, and he has spent the past 27+ years learning to live, race and thrive with this condition. For Justin, diabetes isn't a limitation - it's simply part of the journey. As he shared on a Bike Talk With Dave podcast: “It’s all I’ve known. So there’s nothing I can’t do.”

Justin is one of the cofounders of InStride T1D, an advocacy, tech development and community building venture focused solely on the diabetes side of Justin's life. This works in tandem with Justin's pursuits in professional cycling, as he is able to put more focus on the each pillar while actively pursuing both to the fullest.

Justin produces the weekly podcast that InStride T1D is currently publishing, and speaks openly about the nuance, detail and ups and downs of life with diabetes both inside and outside of sport.

Through racing, Justin has connected with countless individuals living with diabetes at events across the U.S. and around the world. He embraces every opportunity to speak with others—whether cyclists or not—about the realities of managing diabetes while performing at the highest level of sport.

Justin doesn’t shy away from the challenges of racing with diabetes. Instead, he uses them as opportunities to inspire and empower others to pursue their goals fully, regardless of diagnosis. Having competed in 19 countries, he sees diabetes as more than a personal challenge—it’s a point of connection with millions of people worldwide.

As an athlete, Justin is constantly experimenting with evolving diabetes technologies to optimize performance and daily management. Access to real-time glucose data on his cycling computer is just one example of how innovation has transformed his approach. By testing, adapting, and sharing these advancements, Justin strives to make elite-level strategies more accessible for everyone living with diabetes.

Media

"In 2024, Justin put a larger focus on producing long form content on YouTube… and has found a niche inside the saturated market of cycling social media production."

Media presence is a vitally important piece of every athlete’s job, and it is an avenue Justin has put increased focus on with his transition to a self-supported racing program. Justin was a team and sponsor approved speaker on his prior professional road teams, and he has used his voice to bring awareness to the races he is competing in, the sponsors that support him and the fact that he is racing at the highest level while also managing his Type 1 diabetes.

YouTube

Justin puts a large focus on producing long form content on YouTube, primarily through onboard POV videos throughout races, and has found a niche inside the saturated market of cycling social media production. Justin has been able to capture full-length videos at the premier gravel races on his calendar through some creative tinkering with camera and battery setups, allowing him to be one of the athletes (potentially the only athlete) bringing the actuality of racing at the professional level to the greater public.

This approach to content creation has allowed Justin to be a focal point for individuals who were both at the event in question, or who are researching the event after the fact, and brings his unique story and sponsor base to the eyes of a much wider audience than just those on the start line next to him.

There is always room for growth, and Justin is continuously working to improve how he tells his story, but he has already seen significant traction on the content he has produced so far!*current year stats updated monthly

Instagram

Instagram is not the main focus of Justin’s content creation, but he has an eye for clips and video snippets that can garner attention. Justin wants to include the nuances of diabetes management in his content as often as he can, and is constantly working to weave this in to a greater degree.

Media Features

Justin has been featured in multiple podcasts and articles, and he is comfortable speaking in front of an audience or reporter. Justin is able to articulate his story and educate others about the nuances of racing professionally while managing diabetes simultaneously.
